Parents may dismiss their children’s romances as unimportant or fail to take them seriously as often these romances are short-lived or seemingly unstable and thought of as only being ‘puppy love’.

However, in the last decade researchers have begun to investigate adolescent romantic relationships and it has become increasingly clear that these relationships warrant much more attention than they have traditionally been given.
